LOBOSITZ TO LEUTHEN: Horace St Paul and the Seven in the Years War – 1756-1757 In 1756, Prince Charles of Lorraine confidently expected to be appointed to the chief command of the Austrian army once it was fully mobilised. The Prince thought sufficiently well of St Paul to offer him a post at his side as aide-de-camp and sent him to join Marshal Browne, then commanding in Bohemia, as a volunteer to learn something of soldiering. Having no regimental duties St Paul kept a journal of the day to day operations of the Austrians, thereby learning his new trade. Day by day diary kept by Horace St Paul during the war. He is not shy to write “Nothing happened,” and also when the action is hottest he can be understandably brief. As a man learning his trade, he often records details of almost arcane significance. $60.00

PIRATE KILLERS: The Royal Navy and the African Pirates  Hardcover version. Examines the Royal Navy anti-piracy campaign against African pirates, from the Mediterranean to the shores of West Africa and around to Madagascar. On the Barbary Coast of North Africa, pirates preyed on shipping in the Mediterranean. In the Atlantic, they also terrorized the populations of the coastal towns. Then, about 150 years ago, the RN killed ‘The King of the Pirates’ Bartholomew Roberts and captured his fleet. Scores of his men were executed by the Admiralty Court. But perhaps the most telling sections concern critical engagements, including the daring rescue of the British merchant ship The Three Sisters by HMS Polyphemus in 1848 and the actions of the HMS Prometheus against the Rif pirates a few years later. $40.00

TARGETED TRACKS: The Cumberland Valley Railroad in the Civil War, 1861-1865 Examines the importance of the Cumberland Valley Railroad, which connected Hagerstown, MD, to Harrisburg, PA, and played a central role in the Union war effort. SAARBRUCK TO SEDAN: The Franco-German War 1870-1871 — Volume 1: Uniforms, Organisation and Weapons of the Armies of the Imperial Phase of the War Describes how the armies were organized, equipped, uniformed, and supplied. Equipment is described as well as the medals many men wore on their chests. The color section illustrates many of the lesser known uniforms worn during the war. Technical innovations changed the way armies behaved in the field, railways speeded up movement, the telegraph delivered orders in a fraction of the time, and new weapons altered tactics used on the battlefield. Developments in armaments were not limited to the French, the chassepot rifle was a marvel and the mitrailleuse (a volley gun) could have been a war winner if used properly. The Bavarians had a mitrailleuse of their own design and they developed a modern rifle firing a metallic cartridge at a rate of 20 shots a minute. Includes 41 b/w illustrations, 20 pages of color plates, three maps, and six tables.  $40.00

THE RIF WAR: Volume 1: From Taxdirt to the Disaster of Annual 1909-1921  Volume 1 examines the operations of both sides in rugged northern Morocco, North Africa, between 1909 and 1921, up to the Disaster of Annual. Within are details of the Spanish army, its organization, tactics and reforms to meet the needs of the theater, the fledgling Spanish military aviation which claimed a number of world firsts in this campaign, and their North African auxiliaries and opponents. The Rif War is illustrated with a selection of color artworks and specially commissioned maps.

Spain suffered disasters such as Barranco del Lobo and victories such as the cavalry charge in Taxdirt in 1913, and had had to face enemies such as Mizzian, El Roghi, or the famous El Raisuni. Abd-el Krim’s revolt caused 8,000 Spanish deaths at Annual in 1921 in which much of the new colony was lost, at least temporarily. The war also saw the Spanish army completely reformed, reaching new levels of effectiveness with the founding of the Spanish Legion and the recruitment of Moroccan soldiers of the Regulares. $30.00
