Rules…

Hail Caesar: Battles with Model Soldiers in the Ancient Era – 2nd Edition. Updated version of Hail Caesar ruleset, includes amended rules, new rules for sieges, and the extension of the timeline to include such conflicts as the Hundred Years War and the War of the Roses. Ancients ruleset is designed with 28mm models in mind – although the game is equally playable with 20mm, 15mm, 10mm, and 6mm models and all sizes in-between. The game adapts easily to different styles and sizes of bases. The overall width of units needs to be specified more exactly. This is to ensure that combats and supports work out correctly over the extended combats that are common in ancient battles.

The rules recommend models based into convenient multiples to facilitate changing formations and for ease of handling. Also recommend that foot skirmishers, horse archers, and light cavalry are based individually as the rules allow these units to fight in a dispersed formation with the models spread out. The only absolute constraint is that standard-sized units occupy roughly the same frontage when deployed in their usual fighting formations. Available mid-February. $56.00 USD

Invasion! Rome Against the Cimbri, 113-101 BC. Partly as a result of poor commanders, and partly because the Romans had an innate and misguided belief in the invincibility of their legions, the first battles against the Cimbri were a series of disasters. These culminated in the Battle of Arausio in 105 BC when two Roman armies were utterly destroyed. Includes five maps. Rome finally realized that their republic faced an existential threat, and made the necessary painful political and military changes that were needed to face that threat. Rome also found a commander who could take on the Cimbri – Caius Marius. He was a deeply flawed man – scheming, cautious to the point of cowardice, and quick to claim credit for the achievements of others. Nevertheless, he was a massive improvement on the leaders who had preceded him. $35.00 USD

The Battle of Rocroi 1643: Clash of Seventeenth Century Superpowers. The Battle of Rocroi (19 May 1643) is famous for the French victory over the Spanish Tercios. The Duc d’Enghien, only 21 years old, defeated a Spanish army commanded by Francisco de Melo. The victory has traditionally been attributed to the military genius of the young Duke, to the superiority of the French cavalry, and to the decline of Spanish tactics. The Tercios were no longer invincible. Thus, the date of 1643 established a historical milestone of a paradigm shift in military history: the end of Spanish hegemony and the beginning of the rise of France – the Grand Siecle of Louis XIV. Includes 31 illustrations, 17 black-and-white photos, 8 color illustrations, and 10 maps. $40.00 USD

The Garde Nationale 1789-1815: France’s Forgotten Armed Forces . In mid-July 1789, after the storming of the Bastille, the municipality of Paris organized a Garde Nationale, heir to the militias of the Ancien Regime. Provinces quickly formed identical militias, which intervened in the troubles of the municipal revolution. Bringing citizens together, the Garde Nationale became one of the most important players of the French Revolution. The Garde Nationale remains one of the most misunderstood institutions of the French Revolution and the First Empire. It does not lend itself well to synthesis, and occupies a minor place in the work of historians. Based on contemporary documents – in particular on previously little-used archives – this book analyses the successive organizations of the Garde Nationale in Paris and in the provinces, the evolution of its strength, but also its place in relation to the army, not to mention the recurrent hesitations between the two conceptions of the institution: a national force with a broad recruitment or a local and bourgeois militia. Lavishly illustrated with largely unpublished iconography and original artwork, the book also looks at the uniforms and equipment of the Garde Nationale. $60.00 USD

War and Soldiers in the Early Reign of Louis XIV: Volume 6: Armies of the Italian States – 1660-1690. In the 17th Century, Italy was the third-largest country by population in Europe, after France and Germany, passing into second position for a Century after 1650. Northern as well as southern Italy constituted a key place in the strategic duel between Spain and France, and the Peninsula was on the front line in the struggle against the Ottoman Empire. Moreover, Italian states constituted good examples of fairly efficient governance machines, which developed many matters, included the military. Some of these states experienced long periods of wars. Includes 16 color plates and 100 black-and-white illustrations. $50.00 USD

Reed fought through the entire war as an officer in the 8th Georgia Infantry, most of it with General Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. The Princeton graduate was wounded at least twice (Second Manassas and Gettysburg), promoted to captain during the Wilderness fighting on May 6, 1864, and led his company through the balance of the Overland Campaign, throughout the horrific siege of Petersburg, and all the way to the Appomattox surrender on April 9, 1865. Includes recollections of some of the war’s most intense fighting and strong opinions on a wide variety of officers and topics. With four maps and eight images. $20.00 USD

Bait: The Battle of Kham Duc. Hardback version. The strategic potential of the three-day attack of two NVA regiments on Kham Duc, a remote and isolated Army Special Forces camp, on the eve of the first Paris peace talks in May 1968, was so significant that former President Lyndon Johnson included it in his memoirs. This eyewitness narrative and analysis of a widely misinterpreted battle at the height of the Vietnam War radically contradicts all the other published accounts. Covers the tactical details of the combat narrative, and grand strategies and political contexts of the U.S. and North Vietnamese leaders. $35.00 USD

Wargames…

La Primogenita: 1941 East African Campaign (Wargame) Wargame covers the Allied invasion into Italian Eritrea in the north in 1941 where the most intense fighting took place, especially around the town of Cheren. The Allies invaded Eritrea with two Indian Divisions and some Free French units. The defending Italians consisted mostly of colonial brigades, recruited among Ethiopians and Eritreans. They also had two metropolitan divisions in reserve among which several elite battalions from the ‘Grenadiers of Savoy’ Division were sent north to Eritrea. These battalions (Alpini and Bersaglieri), together with loyal Eritrean colonial troops, held both Allied divisions at bay for eight weeks at Cheren before the survivors were finally forced to retreat towards the Eritrean capital, Asmara. The Battle of Cheren is seen as an hour of glory in the Italian army. Uses a dynamic order-chit system where players give orders to attack, move, entrench, bring forward extra ammo, etc. All order chits have a priority number that decides which order is executed first. After executing four orders each, another set of orders are chosen and played. You will have to chose wisely depending on what forces you have at hand, in what order you wish things to happen, and depending on what you suspect your opponent will choose. Game Turn: 1 week; Hex: 7.5 miles/12.5 kilometers; Units: Battalion to Brigade. $60.00 USD
